Afni is an Illinois-based debt collector that primarily pursues past-due accounts on behalf of telecommunications and utility companies. If Afni is contacting you about an old phone, cable, or internet bill, ask them to validate the debt in writing, and check your credit report to make sure the account is reported accurately.
Has Afni been the subject of regulatory action?
Yes. On November 12, 2020, the CFPB announced a consent order against Afni for violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The Bureau found that Afni furnished information to credit reporting agencies that it knew or had reasonable cause to believe was inaccurate, failed to report the correct date of first delinquency on certain accounts, and did not properly investigate consumer disputes or send consumers the required notices about investigation results. The order imposed a $500,000 civil money penalty and required Afni to review its account data monthly and hire an independent consultant to audit its credit-reporting compliance. If Afni has reported inaccurate information about your account, or failed to correct it after you disputed it, see credit report dispute for how to challenge the entry.
Questions & Answers
Is AFNI a legitimate debt collector?
AFNI shows up in the CFPB consumer complaint database, which tracks real complaints filed against real companies — so it is a legitimate, registered entity, not a scam name. That doesn't mean every call claiming to be from them is real; scammers impersonate real collectors. Verify what they're collecting before paying anything — see what to do the first time a collector contacts you.

How do I stop AFNI from calling me?
Under the FDCPA, you can send AFNI a written cease-and-desist letter and they must stop contacting you except to confirm they've received it or to notify you of specific legal action. This doesn't erase the debt — it only stops the calls. See the cease-and-desist letter glossary entry for how to send one.

How do I dispute a debt with AFNI?
Send a written debt validation request to AFNI's dispute address within 30 days of first contact — they must then verify the debt before continuing collection. See the contact details above for the current mailing address.

Is AFNI on my credit report?
If AFNI is collecting on an account, it can appear on your credit report as a collection tradeline, separate from the original creditor's listing. Check your credit report directly to confirm, and see the credit report dispute guide if anything about the listing looks wrong.
