Debt Settlement Cost Estimator
Debt settlement companies advertise cutting your balance, but the fee they charge — 15-25% of what you enroll — is added on top of whatever you actually settle for, not subtracted from your savings. Enter your balance and this runs the real total, using industry-typical outcomes as the default assumptions.
Debt settlement cost estimator
A settlement company's fee is charged on your enrolled balance, not on what you actually settle for — and it's added on top of the settled amount, not deducted from your savings. This estimates the real total, not just the headline "we'll cut your debt" pitch.
| Enrolled balance | Settled amount | Company fee | Total you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $5,000 | $2,000 | $7,000 |
| $20,000 | $10,000 | $4,000 | $14,000 |
| $35,000 | $19,250 | $7,000 | $26,250 |
Total paid = (balance × settlement rate) + (balance × fee rate). Enter your own numbers below.
This estimates the settlement math only — it doesn't account for interest and late fees that keep accruing on unsettled accounts while you save, or the possibility a creditor sues before you reach a settlement. See How Much Does Debt Settlement Cost? for those risks and how settlement compares to consolidation or bankruptcy.
Questions about this calculator
Is the company's fee deducted from what I save, or added on top?
Added on top. The fee is charged on your enrolled balance, not netted out of the settlement — so a lower settled amount doesn't automatically mean a lower total cost if the fee percentage stays the same.

Why does this tool default to a 50% settlement rate instead of a lower number some companies advertise?
Real program outcomes, per companies' own disclosures, cluster closer to 50% of the enrolled balance before fees — a much lower advertised number is often a best-case scenario, not a typical one. Adjust the field if a specific company has given you a documented, case-specific estimate instead.

Does this account for interest and late fees while I'm saving toward a settlement?
No — those keep accruing on accounts you've stopped paying directly during the program, on top of the totals this tool calculates. See How Much Does Debt Settlement Cost? for that risk and how it compares to consolidation or bankruptcy.
